"My brothers and I own farmland in three different counties in central Kentucky and we needed another tractor that would be faster and more comfortable to drive than a conventional farm tractor," says J.D. Crawley, Harrodsburg, Kent., about the "tructor" he built with his brothers, Ron and Royce. They also operate Crawley's Auto & Machine Shop.
"We needed another tractor to rotary cut, disk harrow, and move round bales of hay. We built it using a GMC 1 1/2 ton truck and chassis. The rear end and trans-mission assembly are from an Oliver 70 row crop tractor with dual range transmission. We repowered the truck with a 1973 Cadillac engi...

FARM SHOW - HydroStar Works Great For a FARM SHOW Reader!
I got a call the other day from Myron Rhodes, Harrisonburg, Va., who wanted to thank us for running a story in the 2011 Best of FARM SHOW issue on the HydroStar add-on hydrogen generator.
“I’ve been interested in hydrogen fuel for a while so when I saw your story, I contacted the manufacturer, Andrew Herold, and bought a unit to install in my 2006 Dodge mini van. Before installing the HydroStar, I got 23 mpg on the highway and 15 or so on country roads. After installation, I now get an amazing 35 mpg on the highway and 25 on the local roads,” Myron told me.
I’ve heard these kind of stories in the past on older, inefficient engines but almost never on newer computer-controlled, fuel-injected engines. Sometimes people would tell me they had great fuel savings at first but then the c...

For a FREE issue of Farm Show Magazine, go to http://www.farmshow.com
Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/FARMSHOWMagazine
Twitter: http://twitter.com/FarmShow
"It saves time and rides much smoother than a conventional tractor. It's also fitted with controls that make my round baler a lot easier to operate," says custom hay baler Dan Krueger, of Shawano, Wis., about the "high-speed" tractor he built using parts from an old pickup and combine. It lets him pull his Deere 435 round baler at speeds up to 11 mph in the field and up to 50 mph on the highway.
The speedy tractor was built on the frame of a 1970 Chevrolet 3/4-ton pickup and has dual 20-in. lugged truck tires on the rear axle with single 20-in. truck tires in front. Air bags off a semi truck mount under the rear axle. The cab and...

FARM SHOW - Home-Built Electric-Powered Tractor
For a FREE issue of Farm Show Magazine, go to http://www.farmshow.com
Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/FARMSHOWMagazine
Twitter: http://twitter.com/FarmShow
"No one's ever made an electric-powered tractor as well-built or as versatile as mine. It'll blow snow, mow grass, grade drive-ways, and tow big loads," says Peter Heide, Steinbach, Manitoba, about the workhorse electric utility tractor he built 25 years ago.
The machine is 38 1/2-in. wide, 67 1/2-in. long, 33-in. high, and weighs 1,000 lbs.
It's powered by six 6-volt deep cycle batteries coupled to a 36-volt series wound electric motor.
Heide used dual control, variable coneto-dish friction drives for the transmission. Chain-driven planetary drives off aircraft starters mount inside each drive wheel, which are fitted with 10.5 by 12...

We repowered the truck with a 1973 Cadillac engine and automatic transmission, giving our tructor 24 forward speeds and 6 in reverse. It has 105 horsepower and runs anywhere from 0 to 48 mph.
"In order to keep the automatic trans-mission running cool we installed a 20 gal. per minute oil cooler, with an electric fan, directly behind the cab.
"It's also equipped with a mechanical constant speed governor taken off a Huber Warco backhoe. The hydraulic lift system is powered by a 6 gal. per minute pump, belt-driven off the engine crankshaft.
"In order to connect the tractor trans-mission assembly to the truck rails, we used 1-in. steel plate. We made a new driveshaft from Oliver and Cadillac joints. We used the original Oliver tractor brakes on the tractor for turning. There are hydraulic brakes on the front which give us a third brake pedal.
"Our tructor burns approximately 2 1/ 4-gal. of fuel per hour pulling a 12-ft. disk harrow or an 8-ft. brush cutter.
"We painted the trucktor Oliver green with yellow trim. The front wheels are 750-20 GMC truck wheels and tires. The rear wheels are oversize 1200-38 Oliver tractor wheels and tires.
"This rig has performed exceptionally well for two years with no major problems. The approximate cost to build was $2,500."

We repowered the truck with a 1973 Cadillac engine and automatic transmission, giving our tructor 24 forward speeds and 6 in reverse. It has 105 horsepower and runs anywhere from 0 to 48 mph.

Sometimes people would tell me they had great fuel savings at first but then the computers in the vehicles would “adjust” to the new fuel mix and mileage would go right back to what it was before. So I asked Myron what he did different.
“The key to making it work is the new Volo FS2 performance chip (www.voloperformance.com) which is made specifically for the electronics in your vehicle to allow it to burn supplementary hydrogen fuel. It’s a simple chip that plugs into the OBD-II data port under the dash of all late model cars. It allows the electronics to adapt to the introduction of hydrogen into the combustion process,” says Rhodes. “No fine-tuning needed. Just install, hit the reset button for automatic calibration, and forget it.”
Rhodes has another trick for running his HydroStar unit. “I installed a simple battery-powered digital amp meter under the dash (cost $10 online). I wired it to the unit and also to a toggle switch on the dash. When I turn it on I can see how many amps the HydroStar is drawing. It should be at 11 to 20 amps. I flip it on, see if it’s okay, and then turn it off. If it drops below 11 amps, I top it up with the sodium citrate solution that I use in the hydrogen unit. Every 800 miles or so I empty the tank and refill it, then monitor it with the amp meter until it’s back up to full power.”

The cab and hydrostatic transmission came out of a Deere 7700 combine. The hydrostatic transmission is connected to a 4-speed transmission out of a junked truck. Power is supplied by a Deere 4-cyl. turbocharged industrial diesel engine with 109 hp. All baler operations are controlled by a single "joystick" lever in the cab that's equipped with four electric switches. Krueger also mounted tandem axles on the baler.
"I built it because I bale hay over a 40-mile area and spend a lot of time on the highway between jobs. I wanted more speed on the road and a better ride in the field. My baler can handle a lot of hay, but in rough fields with a conventional tractor I couldn't go fast because I could hardly stay in the seat. The combination of the air bags, suspension seat, dual rear truck tires, and tandem axles on the baler smoothes out the ride. The lugged truck tires provide traction and flotation.
"The 4-speed transmission has a lot of range and power in first gear which works great for baling. I can crawl along or go up to 11 mph in first gear. I can go up to 50 mph in third gear on the highway which is about as fast as I dare go pulling a 2-ton baler. I modified the pickup's brake system to double the brakes' stopping power and mounted a rollbar designed for a Deere tractor behind the cab so that if I'm ever forced into a ditch at high speed I'll have roll-over protection. I also use a seat belt.
Krueger bought the junked pickup frame for $50 and cut it off just behind the rear axle, then removed the rear coil springs and replaced them with air bags. The combine's hydrostatic transmission ran in the opposite direction as the engine so he mounted the engine backward. The hydrostatic transmission is connected to a 4-speed truck transmission from an old 1-ton IH truck. The 4-speed transmission runs backward in order to match up with the hydrostatic transmission.
A 3-groove pulley bolted onto the engine crankshaft belt drives a shaft that runs along the left side of the pickup frame back to a reduction gearbox. The gearbox chain drives the pto shaft and reduces shaft speed from 1,250 rpm's to 600 rpm's. "The pto runs a little faster than the normal 540 rpm's, allowing me to throttle the engine down and conserve fuel," says Krueger. An air cylinder mounted next to the engine is used to control a spring loaded idler that engages or disengages the belts.
All hydraulic controls are powered by a 2-way air cylinder mounted at the back of the tractor. The air cylinder is powered by an old air conditioner pump that Krueger converted into an air compressor. An electric clutch connected to a pressure switch kicks the compressor on or off. A master switch, salvaged from an electric motor on a car that was used to open or close the windows, activates solenoids that operate the air controls.
The compressor and air controls are mounted in a box outside the cab. Krueger activates the controls by using four 2-way switches mounted on a hydrostatic lever. One switch opens or closes the baler endgate, one starts or stops the pto, one electronically controls the engine throttle, and one automatically turns the pto off as soon as the endgate is opened and turns it on as soon as the endgate is closed. The engine throttle control is powered by an electric motor (salvaged from the car) that's bolted to the side of the engine
Krueger used steel plate to close up the back of the combine cab where the grain tank had been and also the right side of the cab where the engine was mounted. He mounted a window in the back side of the cab and put a mirror in front of it inside the cab.
The cab has three foot-operated brake pedals - individual pedals for the rear tires and a combination pedal for the front tires. The steering wheel and column came out of an old Chevrolet Citaton car. Electronic controls in the column are used to operate the dimmer switch, windshield wiper, and directional lights. Krueger made the fenders by bolting lengths of 12-in. wide rubber belting to a length of curved steel. "The belting is flexible so if it hits something it'll bend without breaking," he notes.

Chain-driven planetary drives off aircraft starters mount inside each drive wheel, which are fitted with 10.5 by 12-in. low-profile flotation tires. Independently con-trolled drive wheels permit 360? spins, Heide notes. Rear caster wheels fitted with small aircraft tires help to turn on a dime. Top speed is 5 mph.
Drive levers in the middle of the tractor are fitted with cams that automatically en-gage the tractor's brakes when moved to the central, neutral position. Brakes came off a snowmobile.
The tractor's seat is fitted with prongs so it can be positioned in one of two sets of sockets in its frame. It can be turned 180? to face backwards.
Heide built a 3-pt. hitch for the tractor out of tubing and flat iron. He uses linear actuators, like those used to open and close bombay doors on aircraft, to lift and tilt the 3 pt. with the control levers.
Heide's 3 pt.-mountable snowblower, mower deck, blade and bucket are all 42 in. wide.
He uses a General Electric snowblower for clearing snow. He modified the original snowblower by cutting off two auger flights from one side, then reattaching it at a 90? angle, giving him four shovels instead of two to increase capacity 50%. He also re-positioned the motor and made a new chain drive for the blower to improve balance and visibility over it. For snow-blowing, drive wheels are in front.
He uses a General Electric mower which has separate electric motors for each of its three 16-in. overlapping blades. For mowing, castor wheels are in front. A two-tire oscillating axle bolts on instead of the single tire axle for operating on uneven ground.
Heide can mow about a half a day be-fore having to recharge the tractor with his 115-volt automatic recharger. He can blow snow for two or three hours before recharging. It takes about three hours of recharging for each hour of running.
"I've been told it would be too costly to mass produce, but I wouldn't trade this buggy for the moon, says Heide. He has about $4,400 invested in the project.
